Principal Report
Over the past six months, we have been working together as a teaching community to understand what makes Illawarra Primary School so special. Through conversations with students, staff, and families—including your valuable feedback using the “Two Stars and a Wish” approach—we have been able to capture the essence of our school’s culture, strengths, and aspirations.
We are excited to share the first draft of our Illawarra Primary School Belief Statement—our mission!
At Illawarra Primary School, we believe in the power of connection to foster growth and success. We are dedicated to nurturing each student’s unique potential within a caring and inclusive community, so that their light can shine brightly.
This is a work in progress, and we would love to hear your thoughts. What resonates with you? Is there anything missing? What might you change?
In addition, we are seeking input on a “Why” Statement—a short, powerful phrase that captures the heart of our mission and reflects our school emblem, the lighthouse. Here are some ideas so far:
- Illawarra Primary School… Curious, connected learners.
- Lighting learning for everyone.
- Igniting learning.
- Lighting the path to lifelong learning.
- Igniting curiosity, inspiring growth.
- Empowering every learner to shine.
- Nurturing bright minds.
- Growing together, learning forever.
- Where every learner shines.
Do any of these speak to you? Do you have a different suggestion? We would love to hear from you! Please share your thoughts with us—your input will help shape the future of Illawarra Primary School.
Thank you for being part of this journey.

2025 SRC
Congratulations to the students who have been voted in as our Student Representative Council members for 2025. We had a large number of students run for the positions, and Mr Hayen and Mr Cooke are looking forward to working with our 2025 SRC.
School Athletics Carnivals
Last week we had two days of running, games & relays as part of our school Athletics Days.
On Thursday it was the turn of our Prep – Grade 2’s, who participated in a range of events including a 70m race, a rotation of traditional Japanese relay games, some longer races, relays and team activities. These were all really well run buy our Student House Leaders. They all did an amazing job with only a very short “training” period to run all of these events. Well done to everyone on a great day of physical activity.
On Friday it was the Grade 3 – 6’s who had a full day of activities including 70m to 800m races as well as lots of team games and relays. We had awesome weather, and it was great to see such a high level of participation. Once again, we needed the help of some leaders and 11 students from Kingston High School came along and were amazing in running activities and actively supporting our students. A big thanks to those students. Thank you to all of the teachers who supervised and did the specialist jobs of starting and judging. There were some very close races!! Also, to Mrs Nanna, at the recording desk, who tallied up all of the points to see who will take out the shield for this year. With 1500 metre races to go all three houses could win…with only 3 points separating 1st and 2nd!! These events will be held next week at school.
Students who performed well in the Division 1 races will be given forms this week to participate in the Huon Channel Athletics Event to be held at Huonville Athletics Track on Wednesday 26th March
Well done everyone!!

1B News
This week in Science, 1B took their learning outside to explore forces in action! As part of our Physical Science unit, we tested our predictions on which toy vehicle would roll the furthest and which would roll the fastest down the hill. After observing the results, we experimented with different toy vehicles and levels of push and recorded our findings. It was a hands-on and exciting way to see forces at work!

1WC News
In 1WC we have been looking at families in History. First, we talked about our own families and did a family portrait. We looked at all the places in Australia and around the world where our families come from. Then, we came up with a big list of places and talked about differences between our families. Next, we read some books about different family structures and compared these structures to our own families. It was fun being detectives and finding differences and surprisingly many similarities between student’s families and other families, when we put our creative thinking hats on.

Grade 2 News
Last week, Grade 2 enjoyed the Prep-2 Athletics Carnival. It was a day full of fun with lots of different activities. As well as our races, we practised our teamwork through a range of novelty events including the Big Pants race, the vortex, and the sponge race. It was a great opportunity for us to work together as a Grade 2 team and to cheer on our teammates. Thank you, Mr Iles, for organising such a great day!

ART News
Our Prep to Grade 6's have started the year with some wonderful artwork.
