Principal Report
Over the past fortnight, I've had the pleasure of meeting many members of our school community and learning more about the incredible work of our Teacher Assistants, support staff, and teachers. I've been building connections and exploring classrooms whenever possible.
This week, I attended my first whole school meeting (P-6). It was a wonderful opportunity for students and staff to come together to share school events, celebrate achievements, and provide important reminders. I was particularly impressed by the students' high level of respect and attentive listening to our student leaders. Well done, everyone!
I am looking forward to the IPSA Disco fundraising event this evening and hope to see many of you there! Special thanks to our School Association for organising this event and to our teaching staff for making this possible.

Young Archies 2024
VIPS- Friendly Faces/Young Archies 2024
Participating in the Annual Young Archie competition has become a wonderful creative opportunity for our students and an Illawarra tradition. Students again have been encouraged to create a portrait using a variety of media and techniques. This year we continued with the VIPS theme to coincide with the YA. The VIPS is a play on the IPS of Illawarra Primary school and the usual acronym of Very Important People. The very important people who form the school community and who help make IPS a wonderful place to be. 2024 theme was friendly faces on site. Over the next few years, the focus will be on different groups of people that form our school community.
Each class now has a display of amazing portrait works within their rooms. The Encouragement award winners will be on display in the main foyer next week.
Congratulations to Natalie, Violet, Heidi and Marni (Yr 5-6), Jack, Niesha, Zibah and Erin (Yr3-4), Matilda, Harry, Niamh and Eloise (Yr 1-2) River, Rafael, Clancy and Sam (K-P) on their works being selected to represent Illawarra at the State-wide Young Archies Competition. All competition entries will be on virtual display in an online gallery early September: Young Archie Awards/Tasmanian Education Dept website.
Congratulations also to the following students who received an Illawarra Encouragement Award from the judges- Victor, Grace, Charlie, Louis, Ayla, Luna and Ewan (5-6), Georgia, Ted, Henry, Chloe, Gus, Natalie and Ruby (3-4), Athena, Indi, Henry, Aviannah, Ethan, Stella and Hanna (1-2), Ruby, Flynn, Luca, Charlie, Olivia, Leon and James(P-K).
The creative and technical quality of the work makes judging the portraits such a difficult yet rewarding activity and the judges were very impressed by the work of our Illawarra artists.
Well done to all our students for their effort to produce a creative portrait of someone they know; and thank you to the panel of judges for giving up their time to judge the hundreds of amazing entries.

Hands-on Learning Update
At Hands-on Learning, we've kicked off the Christmas spirit early this year. Our students have already begun crafting Christmas trees from old pallets, a project that truly showcases their creativity and various skills. They've been measuring wood lengths and adjusting them as needed, putting their math skills to practical use. These unique Christmas trees will be for sale to the school community.
Other students continue their dedicated work on renovating the Bee Hotel, a project that has been both challenging and inspiring. Teamwork is at the core, as students must agree on the design, style, and materials to use. They proposed to add a mini garden to provide a pollen source for the bees. With their dedication, there's no doubt that it will be the best hotel in the district!
Last week, we had an unexpected and delightful surprise. Tim, School Support Manager – Southern Tasmania for Hands-on Learning, came to visit with Beck (HOL) from Melbourne, who brought along a very generous gift from Bunnings.
Tim had a large bag of RYOBI tools for the Hands-on Learning program, which Bunnings had kindly donated. These tools will be put to good use by our students in our woodworking and construction projects, allowing them to develop their skills and create impressive results. We are truly appreciative of this generous gift. Thank you, Tim & Bunnings!
Lunch continues to be a highlight of the day. Last week, students made delicious pizzas, and this week, we're making our famous HOL garden pasta, which includes vegetables students have grown.
Cheers,
Mrs Nanna
