Principal Report
Dear Families,
Next Friday 7th of June is a student free day due to all schools participating in an annual Moderation day.
This year our school is moderating with Snug, Margate, Blackmans Bay, Bruny Island and Woodbridge schools. This is the first year all the Channel schools have moderated together, excepting Kingston Primary. This will enable teachers from a wide cross section of schools to learn from each other’s practice and expertise. We will be focusing on assessing students’ ability in reading comprehension as reading is currently a key priority for improvement across all DECYP schools.
Moderation is important in that it supports teachers to:
- clarify their understanding of the quality of learning required for each achievement standard described in the curriculum
- identify the evidence of learning that is demonstrated in work samples
- develop consistency of judgement in assessment among teachers within a school and across schools in the system
- identify what to teach next to support the progression of learning
Yesterday the SRC ran a ‘comfy clothes’ day which saw many students in pjs, oodies, trackies and uggies (despite it being an unusually warm day for this time of year!). Thank you to all our families and students for supporting the day. Over $600 was raised with all the proceeds going towards supporting Tassie Mums and our Kids Matter afternoon in Term 3. The winning number of lollies in the jar was 245 and this was selected by one of our lucky grade 6 students, Luca G.

Courtney Absolom, our new social worker, started with us this week. Courtney is replacing Angela Spooner who was with us briefly from the start of this year and will be working with us every second Thursday. Courtney is excited to join the Illawarra Team to work with us in supporting students and their families.
Lastly, a friendly reminder that students must not be entering the school grounds earlier than 8.30 am. An increasing number of students are arriving at school early in the morning before our duty of care commences. We appreciate your support in this matter.
Thanks,
Cathryn

Kindy News
Kinder’s term 2 inquiry is ‘What is over the fence?’
The children were so excited to actually go over and find out!
This has led to learning about birds and insects and how we take care of the land.

Prep CH & 5C Buddy Classes
On Friday 24th May buddy classes Prep CH and Grade 5 Cooke came together during our morning literacy block. During this session students enjoyed working together on reading, rhyming words and decoding.
Undertaking our literacy session together greatly benefits both the older and younger buddies. Learning together ensures an active learning experience and a deeper understanding. It provides one to one support to younger students and builds fluency, confidence, and develops mentor and leadership skills in our older students.
The session was greatly enjoyed by all students, and we look forward to working together again.

Hands-On Learning Update
The Hands-on Learning team have been having a busy time at the shed. Our students have been actively involved in various activities. For instance, they made labels for herbs, a task that not only enhanced their creativity but will also help in organising herb gardens. They made the labels by hammering spoons flat and then used metal stamps to hammer in the names of herbs, a fun and educational activity.
Additionally, some necessary pruning had to be done as branches were hanging, creating shade, a step crucial for the health and growth of our plants. Some students actively assisted Mr Nigel in scraping grass from the path edges, which has been taking over, a task that plays a significant role in maintaining the neatness and orderliness of our garden.
Last week, we prepared some of the garden beds to be ready for winter planting. The students harvested corn, which they grew with their own hands, and prepared the bed for a cabbage crop—the corn, a delicious outcome of their hard work, made for a satisfying lunch. Mr Hayen also came and generously helped the team render the couch; there is still a lot to be done.
Some students gave 3B a master class on our worm farms. We showed 3B the difference between a worm farm worm and a common garden worm and explained what we use the worm casting and juice for.

Knitted Blankets
Illawarra Primary are participating in the ABC Radio Hobart drive to create knitted blankets for those in need. We will donate all our completed 20cm x 20cm squares and they will be sewn together to make blankets.
If anyone has knitting needles, crochet hooks or wool (acrylic is good) that they can donate to our school to assist us with our knitting and crocheting we would be very grateful.
We will also collect squares if anyone feels like joining our quest.
Thank you

Burns Awareness Month
Summerleas Road changes
Please be advised of upcoming road changes in Kingston.
To improve pedestrian and cyclist safety Council will be installing a pedestrian underpass at Summerleas Road, adjacent to Whitewater Creek. The underpass will complete a missing link on the Whitewater Track, allowing pedestrians and cyclists unhindered and safer travel from the Kingston CBD through to Spring Farm estate without having to cross any roads.
Works will commence at the site on Friday, 7 June 2024. Motorists may experience some travel disruptions for the initial two weeks.
To construct the underpass Council will be closing Summerleas Road between Queens Parade and Whitewater Crescent for around ten weeks (weather dependent) commencing Monday 24 June 2024. A detour will operate via Willowbend Road and Whitewater Crescent for the duration of the works.
To manage increased traffic volumes on Willowbend Road and Whitewater Crescent we encourage motorists to use Huon Highway to get in and around Kingston, including to the High School and all the sporting and recreational facilities in the area. To remind motorists Council will be installing electronic signage on Huon Highway and Southern Outlet, together with static signs on all approaches to Summerleas Road.
Public buses will need to follow the detour route but services to the Queens Parade/Greenhill Drive area will remain unaffected. The Metro bus stop near 53-57 Summerleas Road will be relocated to 3 Whitewater Crescent. The Tassielink bus stop near 100 Summerleas Road will be relocated to 130 Summerleas Road.
A map providing changed traffic details is below. For further project details, including pedestrian management, please visit Council’s website. https://www.kingborough.tas.gov.au/development/transform-kingston/summerleas-road-underpass/
Please contact Council via email at kc@kingborough.tas.gov.au or telephone 6211 8200 if you have any queries.
