Principal Report
Dear Families,
The importance of Mothers, School Nurses and Teacher Assistants have all been acknowledged last week and this week in many schools and the community.
Sunday May 12th was World Nurse Day. Our School Nurse, Lilli and Jos (our School Nurse in 2023) are a huge asset in regard to supporting the well-being of children in our school. So far this year Lilli has worked with upper primary classes on personal hygiene, routines to promote calming the mind, leading teachers through meditations they can use with students to promote a calm classroom, providing parents with information about how to support children with anxiety through articles in the newsletter and through doing Kinder Health checks. What did we do without School Nurses in the past?!
Sunday May 12th was also Mother’s Day. Last week our Kinder students invited their Mums and Carers to a morning of being spoiled through fingernail painting, crown making, portrait drawing and many more activities. The excitement and pride on the children’s faces in being able to look after their Mum or Carer was priceless. I had my own fingernails painted sparkly gold thanks to Harley. Thank you to Mrs. Tracey and Mrs. Kellie for providing Kinder Mums and Carers with this beautiful morning – coffee van and all!
On Wednesday Illawarra Primary School was represented by two Under 10 Boys teams at the Hobart School Futsal Titles. Congratulations to both teams on winning the competition despite this being our first time entering. What an achievement! A full report is further on in the newsletter.
Yesterday we acknowledged the significant role our Teacher Assistants play in supporting the needs of all of our children to reach their full potential and to fully engage with school experiences alongside their peers. We take great pride in our inclusive school community, and Teacher Assistants are an integral part of embodying the safe, fair and caring ‘Illawarra Way’ culture. Staff expressed their appreciation through posting messages in the staffroom and through providing a lovely morning tea we enjoyed together.

In April the Illawarra Primary School Association (IPSA) held their Annual General Meeting (AGM). Congratulations to the parents below who were elected to executive positions -
President: Lisa Nisbett
Vice President: Skye Dayal
Treasurer: Caroline Newman
Secretary: Rachael Lewis
Parent members: Megan Rigby, Sarah Ascencio-Lane, Adele Wilson, Jarrod Coad, Juanita Williams, Chloe Bibari.
Staff members: Cathryn Kelly-Bounds (Acting Principal) Michael Hayen (Assistant Principal).
IPSA enables parents’ aspirations and ambitions for our school to be represented and heard. IPSA works with the school to promote and enact the schools’ values and vision for our students, to ensure children are at the centre of all school-based decision making and to promote a culture of belonging and connectedness within the school community. They also work to raise money that improves the school environment so children can grow and learn to the best of their ability.
This year IPSA has ensured the school continues to be provided with a Canteen service once a week, is planning for a student disco next term, has provided a BBQ after the Walkathon, held a Welcome BBQ for families at the start of the year and continue to provide ethically sourced organic cotton uniform options.
All parents, whether elected member or not, are welcome to meetings. These are held twice a term in the staff room on Thursday nights at 7 pm. Meeting dates are in Calendar of Events and Newsletter and parents can attend remotely. Please email ipschoolassociation@gmail.com if you would like to be sent an invite link before the meeting date.
Finally, last Wednesday our school hosted a statewide gathering of Hands On Learning teachers and staff. Our school was chosen as the 'show case' venue due to our great HoL program practice. Credit must be given to Mrs. Nanna for her efforts in providing a stimulating, inclusive and meaningful program for the students who participate each Friday.
Kind regards,
Cathryn

Students from Prep to Grade 6 have been able to do sessions learning the skills needed to hold a rally and play games. We have had both Indoor and Outdoor sessions, using the weighted shuttle if it was a bit windy. Its been great fun so far and any students who might like to continue on with Badminton should see Mr Iles for more information.

Futsal
On Wednesday May 15, Illawarra Primary School was represented by two Under 10 Boys teams at the Hobart School Futsal Titles. This was the very first time our school has been represented at the competition.
Teams consisted of:
Red: Gus O, Max R, Elliot J, Liam E, Jake K, Orlando P, Oliver P & Coached by Graeme Ogier
Black: Harlie C, Jack G, Harry V, Ethan M, Noah M, Henry K, Bailey R & Coached by Dan Garrozo.
Both teams did an excellent job both on the court and cheering on the other Illawarra team. Illawarra Black dominated all rounds going undefeated against 4 other teams. While Illawarra Red fought hard but suffered one loss and then had to play a very strategic 4th round game. This saw both Illawarra teams securing a place in the Grand Final. The all Illawarra Grand Final saw both teams play an excellent game, keeping it friendly but competitive with Team Red taking out the win.
Both boys and parents should be so proud of their efforts and behaviour throughout the competition with the Grand Final Referee commenting how polite and respectful (while also a little cheeky) all the Illawarra boys were.
Both teams have now been invited to compete in Brisbane at the 2024 National Futsal Championships in September.
Many thanks to; Emily Ogier and Warren Iles for organising and registering the teams; both Coaches, Graeme Ogier and Dan Garrozo for supporting and helping the boys on and off the court; team managers Alyson Coombe and Megan Rigby for their organisation and all the parents and grandparents that were able to help transport and support the boys on the day.

'Tigers' Basketball Team
The 'Tigers' basketball team have taken out the Swisherr Junior League for Grades 1/2.
The team was made up of Illawarra students in Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 plus a friend from a neighbouring school.
The team were undefeated throughout the Term 1 roster and won their Grand Final during the school holidays.
They worked really well as a team, always showed respect for their opponents and referees, improved their skills and most importantly, had a lot of fun playing together!
There was great participation from Illawarra students across the League so well done to all.

Knitted Blanket - Donations Needed
Illawarra Primary are participating in the ABC Radio Hobart drive to create knitted blankets for those in need. We will donate all our completed 20cm x 20cm squares and they will be sewn together to make blankets.
If anyone has knitting needles, crochet hooks or wool (acrylic is good) that they can donate to our school to assist us with our knitting and crocheting we would be very grateful. We can also collect squares if anyone feels like joining our quest.
Thank you.
