Principal Report
Dear Families,
Last week our school participated in the Huon and Channel Swimming Carnival and won! Congratulations to the team who gave their absolute best on the day and represented our school beautifully showing sportsmanship and respectful behaviour at all times. Please see further on in the newsletter for more information about the day.
Congratulations also to IPSA who raised $1700 on election day with their sausage sizzle and bake sale. Thank you to all our volunteers and to the community for purchasing food to support our fundraising efforts.
Next week we will have our annual Walkathon on Thursday April 11th at Blackmans Bay Beach. Students can wear house colours with shoes suitable for walking and running on the beach but must wear their school sun hat. It is always a lovely day out for students and those with a competitive edge are able to test their endurance by getting in as many laps as they can and recording this on their House card. The House with the highest amount of laps completed wins!
Years 3-6 depart school at 9.15am ready for a 9:45am start at the beach.
Years Prep- 2 depart school at 9.30am ready for a 10.00am start at the beach.
All students finish walking by 11.45am for return to school by 12.30pm. Some early childhood classes may return to school earlier.
The School Association will also run a sausage sizzle on the day with counter sales only. Class teachers will get an indication of numbers for the sausage sizzle from students on Monday. Students will be called up a class at a time and must have their money with them. Please see the ad below for prices of sausages and drinks.

We have a busy last week of school coming up next week with the Year 6 students off to visit Parliament House as part of their learning on civics and citizenship, the Year 2 students participating in a silent disco as part of their science unit on sound, selected chess club students are participating in an inter school chess tournament and LiL families will be celebrating the end of term with a picnic at Dru Point park on Thursday. In the first week back of Term 2 the Year 3-6 students will participate in the Cross country, held at Sherburd oval on Tuesday 30th.
Lastly, don’t forget that our School Psychologist, Lesli, will be delivering a free workshop for parents on “Supporting children with anxiety” from 6.30 – 7.30 pm next Tuesday 9th April in the GP room. Come along to hear about what you might notice if your child or children are showing signs of anxiety, helpful ways to respond and how to support our own stress and stay regulated in relation to children’s anxiety.
Kind regards,
Cathryn

Huon & Channel Swimming
Last Tuesday Illawarra sent a team of 43 students to the Huon Channel Division A Swimming Carnival in Huonville. It wasn’t an ideal day for swimming with a few showers in between some sunshine but our team did themselves proud, competing to the best of their abilities. For our Grade 3’s it was their first taste of a representative carnival but after a few early nerves they settled in to some great swimming and brought home a swag of different coloured ribbons.
Overall we had a very successful carnival and in a very close finish were just able to take out first place and bring home the shield for the second year running!! We also won the Dance Off with a fantastic rendition of YMCA and the Nutbush.
Well done Illawarra!!
Even more pleasing was the way that our students not only cheered on each other but also other schools as well as they were finishing their races.
Thanks to the large group of parents who came to support the team and also Mr Hayen who did a great job as a school official marshall.

Grade 5 Molesworth Excursion
A few weeks ago, all the Illawarra grade fives went to Molesworth to do some team building activities. First of all, we got to go across a fun tyre and rope bridge. Then once we had walked to the field where the activities were, we got split into groups of eight or nine. All the students got to do some really fun activities. There was an activity called Save Tas, where the students had to walk on planks of wood together to free a Tassie Devil (Tas) from a cage. It might sound easy but trust me it wasn’t. There were also challenges where you had to jump between tyre swings (my personal favourite), and get balls to move through tunnels to a bucket. There was one challenge called Walk of Doom, where you had to get your whole team around a course with challenging obstacles. Another one was called Toxic Waste, where you had to move balls from one bucket to another by only touching the edge of the strings.
Throughout the day, the adults (the parents and teachers) were taught what it was like to be a student. If the adults gave us a single clue on how to do the activities, they would have to sit under the Naughty Tree for five minutes. They also got put on the spot with questions to see if they were listening, like ‘What was the name of the last activity?’ The person who got asked that question did not get it right. Naughty, naughty. Also, at the end, the adults had to do the Save Tas activity, and the plank of wood they were on snapped!
Overall it was a great day, with lots of fun and team building, and it was so worth the drive.

Voting Day BBQ & Bake Sale Thank You
On Saturday 23 March the School Association made the most of the school being a voting site by holding a fundraising BBQ and Bake Sale. This event was a huge success with $1700 raised in just a few hours.
This would not have been possible without the commitment of the Coad family. Thanks to Jarrod, Willow and AJ for running the stall for the entire time and to Fiona for doing dashes to the supermarket for extra sausages and bread. A HUGE thanks to Skye Dayal for her huge commitment to making the day a success too, signing up to bake AND help in all time slots, even staying beyond them.
Bakers – you are amazing! Your delicious treats were all snaffled up and we can’t thank you enough for allowing us to add this to our offerings and fundraising efforts.
Thanks to Robert Dillon and Justin Rigby for their assistance setting up as well as Adele Wilson, Kate Huntington and Ayla Bibari for their help on the stall.
Thanks to IPSA members, Leah Avery, Megan Rigby, Chloe Bibari and Rachael Lewis for their work behind the scenes and on the day. Huge thanks to our IPSA sign writer, Siobhan Marriott, for her amazing signs, writing skills and also getting in early before the political signage.
Thanks also to Caitlin at Banjo’s Bayview Market for donating a portion of the bread and rolls, then going in on her day off to ensure the order was picked up without a hitch.
Most of all, thanks to the local and Illawarra Primary School community for voting at our site and purchasing something to support our School Association. Another small step towards the resurfacing of those courts!
