Principal Report
Dear Families,
There is much to report on this fortnight. Firstly congratulations go to Connor A whose portrait of Mrs. Ashlin was a category winner at the state level at the Young Archies Awards judging on the weekend! Congratulations also go to Heidi L in Kinder whose portrait of her twin sister Annika was Highly Commended in the Kinder category.

Growth and Development program – This week and next week our School Nurse, Joss, has been teaching grade 1 and 2 children about consent, respect and that they are in control of their own bodies. This also supports them to understand how to respect other people’s space and personal boundaries. The messaging for children is “From my head to my toes, I say what goes”.

School intentions for 2024 - please email the office on illawarra.primary@decyp.tas.gov.au if your child will not be attending Illawarra Primary next year. This enables us to have accurate numbers when organising classes for 2024.
Class placements for 2024 – at the beginning of Term 4 staff will begin working on class groupings for next year. At this stage the intention is to have straight grade classes across the school other than a 4/5 class. If there are educational reasons that warrant particular consideration being given to the class placement of your child, please email Michael Hayen (AP) at michael.hayen@decyp.tas.gov.au no later than the end of this term, Friday 29th of September.
IPSA members have been busy lately running a very successful Quiz night at which the teacher table maintained their current winning streak for school Quiz nights! Thank you especially to Sarah Ascencio-Lane, Megan Rigby and Lisa Nisbett for their hard work in pulling this together, and to Pete McKenna for being MC. We are grateful to the businesses that provided donations to make this such a successful night of fundraising for our school as well as our enthusiastic parent and community quizzers and volunteers. A more detailed report on the Quiz night is later on in the newsletter.
I would also like to acknowledge Bunnings Warehouse in providing us with a generous discount to replace our old BBQs with two new ones. Thanks to Jarrod Coad for organising this. These will be put to good use at our IPSA organised Dinner, Drinks and Disco fest in November.
A couple of reminders…
Please do not allow children to stay after school unsupervised to play in the playground. Children who are unsupervised or not picked up until later are playing with children who are enrolled in the after-school care program. This puts pressure on Adventure Patch carers to manage extra children in their area for whom they should not have responsibility.
Lastly, it would be appreciated if parents completed the online survey about our school. Your feedback is very important to help us inform our school-planning and decision-making. The survey is open until Friday 22 September 2023 and should take about 5 minutes to complete.
You can take the online survey by clicking the link or pasting it in your browser: https://ncv.microsoft.com/Cxi7YXJiCY The survey is carried out on a secure website and all responses are anonymous and confidential.
All families in this school received the same survey link and no identifying information is collected. A summary of the survey results will be provided to us. Responses from individuals or small groups will NOT be disclosed to any DECYP staff.
Kind Regards,
Cathryn

PE News
VOLLEYBALL
Last Tuesday 5 teams worth of Grade 6’s competed at the annual Huon & Channel Spikezone Volleyball Tournament at the Sports Centre. We took on a number of schools from the Huon & Channel region in short games demonstrating the great skills and teamwork we had been learning in our PE Volleyball unit.
It was a great day and our teams did an amazing job. Illawarra 5, consisting of Nick, Campbell, Harry, Meg and Symi, were the winners on their final court whilst the other 4 teams placed either 2nd or 3rd on their courts. We also had Ellis & Annabelle nominated for Sportsmanship certificates. A big thanks to Volleyball Tasmania for helping out. Any students who want more information on Volleyball pathways can check out Home - Volleyball Tasmania

Huon and Channel Football Carnival
On the 22nd of August 3 Illawarra students Tom P, Noah W and Xavier S competed in a Huon and Channel football team at the Southern Primary Schools football carnival. They went out to Claremont Cadbury Oval and played 3 games of football. The team came 3rd overall winning 2 out of 3 games. Congratulations to all the students who competed in the carnival!

Huon & Channel Soccer
On Tuesday 22nd August 10 students from Illawarra who were selected in the Huon Channel Soccer team made their way to Wentworth Park for the SPSSA Winter Sports Carnival. We had two boys and two girls teams who had a great day with some close games, some great goals and outstanding sportsmanship on what was a chilly day on the Eastern Shore. Well done to Thomas, Fletch, Finn, Alex, Harry, Sam, James, Dylan, Symi & Lilly. Thanks to the Kingborough Lions for providing training, coaches and playing tops for the day

Schools Triathlon 2023
The Schools Triathlon Event for Primary Schools will be held on Friday 1st of December. This seems like a long way away, however, the Schools Triathlon is a massive event which requires weeks of organisation once entries are received. So we need to get our School entries completed by the end of this term. It’s a great event and a great way to be active as an individual and also as part of a team. To enter students can either get a form from Mr Iles here at school starting from next week or you can download and print your own at home. Entry-Form-2023.pdf (schoolstriathlonchallenge.com)
However, there is also a school permission form which you must get from Mr Iles. Both of these forms then need to be returned along with payment ($25), which can be done electronically at the office if required. All students receive a Triathlon drawstring bag, swim cap, number bibs, finishers cap as well as fruit and water at the finish line. Students doing the team event must have this sorted on the entry form and all entrants can choose to do both individual and team events or just the individual or just one leg of a team race. There is no extra coast if you choose to do individual AND the teams event.
More information will be on the school permission form and there is heaps to look at on the STC website Event Info – Schools Triathlon Challenge in terms of event information, fund raising, nutrition advice and even bike maintenance
Interschool Chess Competition
Our after school chess club has been running very successfully on Wednesday afternoons, with 25 students participating this term.
On Monday, 4 September, eight of our Grade 3-6 chess club students competed in a Huon and Kingborough interschool chess competition.
This was the first time we have sent a team to an interschool competition and Thion, Leo, Will, Ethan, Liam, Heidi, Natalie and Lincoln had a great day, playing seven matches against some difficult opponents. At the end of the competition we placed a very creditable fourth out of nine teams.
If your child is interested in joining our chess club, please keep an eye out for the flyer that we will be posted on seesaw later this term.

Book Club Update
Apologies for the delayed arrival of the last Scholastic Book Club orders - there was a courier issue that has held up some orders. These last remaining orders should be arriving next week for distribution to students.
The newest catalogue has also arrived - orders can be placed until the 12th of September through the online LOOP ordering system or by returning an order form with cash to the Illawarra School Office.
Student purchases of books from the Scholastic Book Club earn rewards and have resulted in over $500 worth of new books being added to the school library for eager readers this year alone!

Attendance Notifications
Please contact the Office with all attendance notifications no later than 9.30am to avoid receiving a phone call from our office staff. You can call on 6229 6295 or email Illawarra.primary@decyp.tas.gov.au
Please don’t email or SeeSaw the class teacher directly as they don’t always have time to check these before classes start, and then we end up calling you unnecessarily.
Parents/Carers being on school grounds
A reminder for all parents/carers, if you are coming onto the school grounds for any reason during the day, you must come through the office first. It is a legal and safety requirement that the school knows who is on the premises during the day. If you are picking your child up early or dropping them off late, they must be signed in/out at the Kiosk at the front desk. If you are coming in for classroom help, you must first sign in and have your WWVP card verified by the office. The office are required to check these cards every time you are on the premises for an extended length of time, or if you are going out on excursion with a class.
Thank you for your understanding and help in keeping all of our students safe.
