Principal Report
Dear Families,
The past fortnight has been a busy and productive time with students involved in lots of different activities.
Last week a police officer spoke with all students at different grade sessions regarding online safety. The main messages for students were:
✅️ Don't take selfies or photos that identify where you live or go to school.
✅️ Don't have passwords that contain your name or birth date.
✅️ Don't play games with people you don't know or give them any personal information.
✅️ Don't add unknown people to social media such as Snapchat.
✅️ Tell people you trust if you are worried about online issues or access Kidshelpline.
✅️ Be aware of scams.
All of our students learned valuable information to assist them in being more self-protective when engaging with others online. Parents need to be all over this too! ☺️👍💻
Related to the need for students to be self-protective is a website parents may be unaware of called Omegle. It is important that parents know this is a website where people are connected to other strangers to video chat. It is widely known that children access this website and we have it on good authority that they may be exposed to inappropriate interactions. Children and young people may be asked by strangers to share their name, age and location. I would encourage all parents to please take the time to talk to your children about the risks of using this website and be aware of what they are accessing online.

Last night was the final debate for our hard working debaters at Rosetta Primary. The topic was ‘That New Years Eve resolutions are a waste of time’. While initially not thrilled with the topic, the students developed some very sound arguments for both the negative and affirmative side. The adjudicator commented that it was the best round of debating they had seen so far. Having worked with most of these students over the past two years I must say that I am incredibly proud of them and know they are well placed to determine their own direction in life as they begin high school next year with a strong sense of self and an ethical, compassionate and questioning outlook. Well done on all your hard work Baz, Sophie, Deva, Tilly, Cariad and Fenella.

Netball – Congratulations go to the Illawarra Red netball team (Cariad, Chloe, Isla, Natalie, Tilly, Fenella, Imogen and Meg) who this week won the 5/6 NAVY Grand final defeating Aloyius White. Well done also to Imogen Johns who won best on court. A big thank you to parent Eleanor Armstrong for her time in coaching the team through such a successful season.
SRC Fundraising - Yesterday, four members of the SRC visited Big W to purchase socks and underwear with money raised from their Comfy Clothes Day last week. They then travelled on to the Tassie Mums warehouse to deliver these essential supplies to benefit those children less fortunate than themselves. They were taken on a guided tour of the facility and found out a lot more about the fantastic work they do to support children from all over the state. This was a great opportunity to see the impact our school can have on fundraising organisations that rely on community support and goodwill. We look forward to continuing to support Tassie Mums in future fundraising efforts.

Jumping Jacks Move night this Friday! – Lastly, don’t forget to buy tickets for the movie night this Friday – bring a bean bag, cushion to sit on and blankets or oodies. It promises to be a fun night!

Huon & Channel Cross Country
It was a very fun and loud bus drive down to Huonville. Everyone was excited and determined to do their best effort. Even though the weather was on and off we all had a wonderful time. Some of the students even finished in the top 4, and here are some of them:
We had Liam E in 2nd place for the Grade 3 boys,
Leuca W in 3rd place and Kiana B in 4th for the Grade 3 girls,
For the Grade 4 boys we had Flynn A in 2nd place,
For the Grade 6 boys we had Harry W in 4th place,
And amazingly we had 1 person who came first, and she was Meg S for the Grade 6 girls.
Illawarra also won the Grade 4 Boys and Grade 4 girls divisions!
Thank you to all the teachers who brought everyone up and thanks to all of you who cheered us on.
Well done Illawarra!

Book Week 2023
Book Week 2023
At Illawarra Primary School we like to celebrate Book Week in two ways!
One year we have a Costume Parade and the other year a Giant Book Swap.
This year we are doing the Book Swap. However, children are welcome to dress up if they would like to.
What is the Giant Book Swap?
Each child donates a book they no longer read and receive a token.
On Friday August 25th the classes will visit the GP room and use a token to select a book of their choice.
Please donate books which are:
- In good condition
- Attractive
- Not more than 10 years old.

We would also like to have this day as a free dress or book characters dress-up day to raise money for the Story Dogs Australia wide program.
Please donate a coin donation to this worthy program that we are able to have at school.
Sue and Maggie who are volunteers, have been visiting Illawarra Primary for over a year now and it has been wonderful!
Maggie is a Groodle who loves cuddles, playing with other dogs, watching wallabies and of course, listening to kids read!
The vision:
To make reading fun for children, so they become confident lifelong readers.

Wanted
WANTED – That’s not my … books.
I know every family had some of these books at one point!
I am looking to increase our collection of these books to work with children of varying ages and abilities.
If you have any you’d like to donate, please drop them off at the office!
Many thanks, Renee Jordan – Support teacher and Prep teacher
