Principals Report
Principal position next Term
Mr. Donnelly has won a Principal position in another school for Term 2 and we wish him all the best in this new role and new challenge. As a result, the position of Principal at Illawarra Primary for Term 2 will be decided through an Expression Of Interest process, the outcome of which will be shared with the staff, School Association and the wider school community by the end of the school holidays.
Walkathon
Our walkathon today was a great success, and it was fantastic to have the school community come together to enjoy this event at the end of our first term. With students getting stamps for their house for each lap they completed, we had high levels of motivation and determination. Some of our upper primary students completed over 20km and we even had some early childhood students complete over 10km! In total, students walked over 2100km and Bombara were our overall winners with 800km, followed by Wattle and then Waratah. Thank you to Mr. Waugh and Mr. Hayen for their organisation. A huge Thank you to Matt from Howden Bakery who donated 18 loaves of bread for the walkathon. More photos of the Walkathon will be shared on our school Facebook page.
A special thank you to our School Association and the parent volunteers who organised and ran the sausage sizzle for our students to enjoy on their return to school. The level of commitment shown by some of our parents to support these types of events is incredible, and I would encourage everyone to consider assisting at a future time.
To ensure that the food ordering process was streamlined and manageable for the volunteers, the Spriggy App was used. While I appreciate that some parents were disappointed they could not put in orders after the cut off, the ordering system was advertised a number of times via Seesaw, the Newsletter, Calendar of Events and Facebook. Please make sure to check these communication channels regularly so that you are kept up-to-date with important announcements.

Easter raffle
Thank you for your huge support of the Easter raffle. The total amount raised was $2821.00! What an incredible result! See the photos below for the lucky winners.

Moderation
Tomorrow our teaching staff will be working with the teachers at Blackmans Bay Primary to assess student learning against the Australian Curriculum achievement standards. In particular, the Grade 3-6 teacher will be assessing student learning progress in number and the P-2 teachers will be assessing student learning progress in reading. Through moderating with teachers from other schools we strengthen our ability to communicate learning progress against the standards of the Australian Curriculum with confidence and consistency. Moderation also serves to improve understanding of quality assessment practices.
I wish everyone a relaxing holiday and not too much chocolate indulgence. This term has flown by but I am very proud of the way students have settled quickly into learning routines and upheld our high expectations for behaviour by behaving in the safe, fair and caring Illawarra Way. We look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready to go on Wednesday 26th of April.
Kind regards,
Cathryn

Canteen Term 2

Huon & Channel Swimming Carnival
Illawarra Dominates
On Wednesday, 29 of March 2023 Illawarra attended the Huon and Chanel swimming carnival. Students were buzzing with excitement. As we looked around, we could see that all the other schools looked extremely fierce. But that wouldn’t stop us from trying our hardest and doing our best.
You could see that with their black and red caps, Illawarra had their game faces on. After a short list of instructions, grade 3/4 students started to start their first races. Illawarra was crushing the other schools! Soon after the 5/6s had their relays.
As the lifeguards set up the lane ropes, we had a short dance interval. Thank you, Illawarra, for dancing your hearts out to the YMCA and the Nutbush. That scored us some extra points.
By the end of the carnival, you could tell that the hosts were tired of saying, “First place, Illawarra!”
Yes, we won! Illawarra scored a plaque and a pendant for winning. We all went home with lost voices from our screams of encouragement. Well done Illawarra!

City to Casino
This year Illawarra Primary will be entering a school team in the 50th City to Casino fun run. The City to Casino will be run on Sunday May 21 starting at 8:00am, with the option of completing a 2.7km, 7km or 12km course. The run is a great opportunity to set yourself a personal goal to achieve, improve your general fitness and long distance running, and represent Illawarra Primary School in one of the largest fun runs in Hobart. This year will be the first year a 12km course will be run.
I will be running in the 7km race and will organise closer to the date a meeting spot for those students running in both this race and the 2.7km event from Salamanca. Parents not running with their children will need to be at the finish line to pick them up at the conclusion of the race. We are encouraging students to run in the school sports shirts to stand out amongst the crowd of runners and supporters. I will hand these shirts out on Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th May at school to those students and parents who have successfully registered online. If the number of entrants exceed the number of shirts available, preference will be given in order of registration.
If you think you may be interested in joining the team, feel free to jump online and register at https://citytocasino.com.au Our team is Illawarra Primary School in the drop-down box when you fill out your online registration form. Race numbers will be available for collection from the Running Edge in the week prior to the race. Feel free to pop in and see me or send me an email at chris.waugh@decyp.tas.gov.au if you would like further information. See you at the start line!
