Principals Report
Hi Everyone
It has been a busy but very enjoyable fortnight at Illawarra Primary School.
Firstly, I would like to thank the Illawarra School Community for the support the staff were afforded last Wednesday when the school was closed due to the Public Sector Unions’ Stop Work Action. As everyone would appreciate, a decision such as this is not taken lightly, and it is understood that the closing of the school would have been inconvenient for many families. However, the arrangements parents made for their children to be collected so quickly at 12.15pm, was a clear demonstration of the support the school community provide the staff.
Student Event Highlights
Over the last two weeks there have been some wonderful student events that deserve special mention. On Thursday and Friday of last week the school’s Student Representative Council (SRC) held a very successful Talent Quest, where students of all ages were provided the opportunity to display their talents. For many it was their first time performing for such a large audience and all participants need to be commended for the courage they displayed and the many talents they possess.
Another special event that needs to be shared is this year’s Jumping Jacks tour of schools. This dedicated and hardworking team of students left Illawarra Primary School at 7.30am on the morning of Thursday 3rd November to perform at Goodwood Primary, the Sorell School and Bicheno Primary School. On the second day of the tour the team visited Swansea, Orford and Richmond Primary Schools, inspiring a whole new generation of skippers with each performance. A significant highlight of the tour was the night’s accommodation at Triabunna’s Spring Bay Mill. This stunning setting was very much appreciated by the students and staff and inspired an impromptu night-time performance in the site’s amphitheatre. (I encourage everyone to go to the school’s Facebook page for photos and video of recent Jumping Jacks events.) As always, the team were great ambassadors for the Heart Foundation and Illawarra Primary School. It’s not only their physical talents that they need to be recognised for, during these school tours they also display great leadership, resilience, and all the benefits of living a healthy active life. Thank you to Mrs Nanna and Miss Genford for all the extra work and care they provide to support the team.
Last Friday the school’s athletics team travelled to Huonville for the annual primary Huon and Channel Representative Athletics Carnival. It was a great day for the students and the school with many outstanding individual and team performances. It was also very pleasing to hear that the members of the team were not only eager participants but also such great supporters of each other, and in the process represented the school so wonderfully well.
Continuing the athletics focus, I would like to congratulate Claudia and Maddox Day for being selected in the Primary State Team for the 2022 School Sports Australia 10-12 years Track and Field Championships, held in Queensland from Thursday 17 November - Monday 21 November. Both Maddox and Claudia have been selected to represent Tasmania in their age group discus and shotput events. All the best Claudia and Maddox.
It was a pleasure to attend the Kingborough RSL’s Remembrance Day ceremony last Friday with Tilly Hutton and Cariad Lewis. Both Cariad and Tilly are to be commended for the responsible and mature manner in which they represented the school.
2022/23 School Staffing Update.
I’m happy to announce that Mrs Kelly Crane and Mrs Carmen Bull were both successful in applications for the school’s permanent office administration positions. Kelly secured the fulltime position and Carmen the part-time role. The appointment of these two important staff members will provide the school community great support and certainty as we head towards the end of a busy year and then commence all the work required for a successful start to the 2023 school year.
The school also recently completed internal Expression of Interest (EOI) processes for a 0.2 FTE AST Safeguarding Lead role and 0.4 FTE Support Teacher position. I’m pleased to announce that Miss Jess Dwyer won the Safeguarding Lead role and Mrs Philippa Lohrey the Support Teacher position. These appointments will cause some change to teaching teams in 2023 and this information will be included in next year’s class organisation letter, provided at the end of the year.
Don’t forget this Friday’s Dinner, Drinks and Disco Fest. This is sure to be a wonderful school event and a great opportunity to gather as a school community.
Wishing everyone a happy end of the school year.

Huon Channel Athletics
Last Friday a team of 51 Illawarra students headed to Huonville for the Huon Channel Athletics Carnival. With fairly dire weather predicted, we were well prepared with tarps & towels and changes of clothes but fortunately the forecasters weren’t quite right and we had a pleasant day for running, jumping and throwing!!
Our students all performed well and were great ambassadors for the school in the way they gave their best, supported each other and demonstrated sportsmanship in all of their events.
We had many ribbons in both individual and team events, as well as a number of students who exceeded their own expectations and came home with a ribbon of some colour.
A big thanks to Miss Catterall who came down to assist with our team and the running of the carnival. Also to the large number of parents who came to support…it’s great to have that parent support back again after a few carnivals where there have been limits on spectators coming to watch.
Well done to all of our athletes!!
Also we had two students who travelled to Launceston for the State Carnival. Lucy Page and Flynn Ascencio-Lane both represented Huon/Channel and did very well with Flynn bringing home 3 third place ribbons and Lucy winning the Grade 6 girls high jump. Great work guys!!

The last big sporting event for the year is the biggest!! We have 68 super keen triathletes registered for the Schools Triathlon on Friday December 2nd. The kits have arrived at school and will be given out early in the week of the event. Please remember that transportation to and from the event is each individual's responsibility. Students will have a meeting to discuss all aspects of the day including how to race and how it all works for those who have not competed before.
