Principal's Report
I hope everyone is coping with the recent cold snap. The weather has certainly had an impact on the staff with playground duty not being quite as pleasant as usual, but we marvel at the resilience of the students who continue to enjoy their break times. Most students are now rugging up and wearing warmer items of school uniform, although amazingly some are still in shorts and short sleeves. As this weather continues, we will provide increased opportunity for students to stay out of the cold, as was the case last Friday lunchtime when Mrs Terri-Ann Petersen accommodated a great number of students in her Art Room. From the photo Terri-Ann provided you can see that the students were very appreciative of her generosity and preparedness to make her room available.
Over the past two weeks the grades 3 – 5 students have been participating in this year’s Swim and Survive Program. All the students need to be applauded for the positive and enthusiastic way they have approached this learning experience. Mr Iles has also been impressed with, not only the efforts and commitment of the students, but also the calm and cooperative manner in which all students have participated in each daily session. Thank you to the staff who have been so flexible in their teaching and supervision of students over the past two weeks.
COVID UPDATE
Pleasingly over the past few weeks the functioning of Illawarra Primary School has become increasingly normal, this despite there being a number of additional activities and events that have had to be conducted this term, i.e. NAPLAN, Parent/Teacher conversations, the Grade 3 – 5 Swim and Survive Program, etc. This sense of normality is mainly due to the low number of positive COVID cases in the school, and the most recent Public Health decision regarding upcoming changes to the wearing of masks in schools and Child and Family Centres. The recent advice is that as of Monday 27th June face masks will no longer be mandatory in schools and Child and Family Learning Centres. (Please see the item An Update on face masks for more details.)
Although this easing of a COVID requirement will be welcomed by all those who work in schools, as a school community we still need to remain vigilant regarding the maintaining of other COVID safe practices especially as the school has recently experienced a spate of illnesses. There is also considerable community concern regarding this year’s flu season and therefore I ask that all families continue to keep their children home if they are unwell and abide by the public health and DoE direction if their children have any COVID type symptoms. Hopefully the Department of Education’s COVID Plan for term 3, to be provided in coming weeks, will further ease restrictions on schools, allowing for activities such as assemblies, parent-help and other circumstances that support a greater parent presence.
Have a great fortnight everyone.
