Principal's Report

Dear Families,
The next two weeks before the end of term will be busy ones, with Grade 3, 4 and 5 students, as well as some Grade 6 students, attending Swimming and Water Safety lessons each day over the fortnight – they will certainly be in need of a restful break at the end! Grade 3 – 6 classes participated in Marine Safety lessons this week during Health and PE classes in preparation for the upcoming Water Safety program. Thank you to Mr Iles for his organisation of this.
Last Friday we had a very successful Crazy Dress Up Day organised by the SRC, it really did brighten everyone’s day. A highlight was the joke telling over the PA during the day by different grades. Crazy Dress Up Day donations support the Humour Foundation, whose mission is to enhance wellbeing, lift spirits and improve health through insightful connection, creative play and joyful humour in hospitals. The total amount of money raised was $430.
Lastly, many parents pick their children up early from school for various reasons. Can parents please ensure teachers are aware students are leaving early and go to their child’s class to collect their child before signing them out at the office to avoid disrupting the class through phone calls from the office.
Kind regards,
Cathryn Kelly-Bounds
Acting Principal

4/5 Cooke/Hayen - A story from Harri
Class Holiday to the Beach
It's time for our class to go on our class holiday to the beach. I am so excited that we are all going on the bus and I am sitting next to my mates, Jordan, William and Ollie. Pikachu will sit in the middle.
The trip is slow as our class can't wait to get there. We are going up to the East Coast of Tasmania to a place called Orford. My mates are quite noisy as we all chat about swimming at the beach, playing games on the beach and camping in tents in the park which is right next to the beach.
The one thing I can't wait for is lunch time. We get to order hamburgers and chips. I don't want sauce with my chips but my mates do. We all take our lunch back to the park. Wow, we are loving our yummy food.
It's time to set up our tents, we have trouble setting up ours, as Pikachu keeps jumping on our tent. Pikachu is such great fun but we need to get our tents up then we can go and order our ice cream in a cone. Mine will be vanilla. Jordan and William want chocolate and Ollie wants strawberry.
The day gets hotter and we race each other into the water, it is so cold that I run out to warm up then I run back again. We are all so loud, splashing and laughing as the ducks fly away from us. I see them land back in the water near the rocks.
Jordan said to our group, "I need a drink of water!" So off we go and have a big drink of water. So much excitement for the day. We head over to the play equipment to have a spin and a swing. Ollie goes so fast, he is making me feel sick. "Ollie, stop! I need to get off and lie down."
William and Jordan are lying down on their towels, so Ollie and I head over to them to rest and chat about our day. We are all so tired but we keep talking, Jordan is so funny he tells us jokes, one of them in particular cracked me up, I couldn't stop laughing. The joke went like this.
What does a cloud wear under his raincoat?
Thunderpants.
Ollie thought it was silly. William had a quiet giggle, but I lost it, I was rolling around laughing.
What a great day, tomorrow we head back to school.

"Matilda The Musical" Review
On the 2nd of June Grade 5/6 Brancher, Lohrey and Catterall went to watch Matilda the musical at Hobart College. This was performed by Year 11 and 12 students.
There were 2 casts. We saw the ‘Revolting Cast’. The stage was a revolving stage, which was cool. At the start, all the main characters came out like Nigel, Amanda Thripp, Eric and Bruce. There were so many songs I couldn’t choose my favourite! The costumes at the start were very cool. I like how they all matched the character’s personality. My favourite costumes were: Nigel’s soldier’s costume, Amanda’s princess dress, and Eric’s knight in shining armour. The cast were very inclusive. In songs that they wanted to include us, they would make eye contact with us, point to us and help us know when we should clap in rhythm. My favourite part in the first half of the show was when Amanda Thripp got “thrown” from the ceiling. At the start of the second half of the show I liked how Mr Wormwood and Michael came out with an apology letter about reading books, and then picked Henry out for raising his hand in theatre. I liked how many outfit changes there were - they went from one character to another! There were 21 songs in this play and it was amazing! My favourite song was Revolting Children, which was so catchy and is still is stuck in my head. The cast even got the audience involved, by clapping and pointing to us. I think they could have added a few more props to be a birthday party at the start, but other than that is was amazing! I liked how the actors matched the characters. Out of 5, I rate this musical 4.5. They could have added a few more props but other than that it was amazing! This was definitely my favourite musical.

5/6 Catterall
In 5/6C, we have been working on using different types of sentences and figurative language in our writing. We watched a short film about a little old lady who searches through a junkyard looking for treasure. When she finds a diamond ring, instead of selling it, she uses it to reflect light, creating a magical starry sky in her tent.
Here are some of our examples:
"As I look around at the endless piles of unwanted junk, I begin to feel despairingly sad."
By Julian
"I stumble through razor sharp pieces of glass that were clinging for dear life against the car window frame, fighting their way against the wind."
By Jesse
"A small wooden box left deserted under the driver’s seat, patiently waiting like someone waiting at the doctor’s surgery."
By Jonah
"I sigh as I look into the mirror and see how small and weak I have become after years of scavenging."
By Rio
"I was amazed by the wonderful sight: my brown eyes lit up with joy as I lay down in my armchair."
By Maia
"All this lit up Ester’s world, thoughts, and memories. She felt young again. She felt she was in a whole new world as she slowly drifted off to sleep."

5/6 Waugh/Lohrey
Earlier this term, students in Grade 5/6 were set a task to create their own unique animal or plant. As part of creating their animal or plant they had to draw an annotated diagram, identify adaptations that help it survive in its habitat and discuss how it may have to adapt structually, behaviouraly or physiologicaly to survive a change in climate. Here are a few samples of work produced by students in 5/6 Waugh-Lohrey.
