Principal's Report

Dear Families,
Illawarra continues to be a busy and productive place to be, with 5/6 classes off to see the production of Matilda at Hobart College yesterday to compare the live show with the book and movie as part of a literature study. Two of our 1/2 classes travelled to the Marine Discovery Centre today, and all of our Prep and Prep/1 classes visited the Sustainability Centre also. Excursions are a really effective way to bring learning to life for students, and it is great for classes to be able to participate in these again.
This week many classes also participated in the Brightsparks program run by Tas Networks aimed at educating primary-school aged students about the safe use of electricity.
Our Reconciliation Assembly last Friday was organised by our Music teacher, Cynthia, and hosted by 4/5 Cooke/Hayen. Hosts Ruby and Cariad showed great maturity in educating the whole school about the significance of this week, and classes shared what the word reconciliation means to them. To reconcile means to restore friendship and harmony and settle differences. 2021 marks twenty years of Reconciliation Australia, and almost three decades of Australia’s formal reconciliation process. The Welcome to Country song at the beginning of all of our assemblies at Illawarra links us to the living Aboriginal culture in Tasmania and its connection to country.
Lastly, teachers and 5/6 classes will vote next week on the new emblems for our soon to be purchased new house banners (thanks to fund raising from IPSA!). The emblems for Bombora, Waratah and Wattle were designed by 5/6 students during Art classes with the talented Mrs Petersen. See the various designs below that we will choose the final emblems from. We will publish the winners in the next newsletter.

Cathryn Kelly-Bounds

News from Grade 3/4
3/4 Dwyer
In 3/4D, we have been learning about ‘place’. In groups, we researched different states, territories or neighbouring countries of Australia and found out about their natural and human geographical features. Then we wrote a postcard as if we had visited these places. Here are some of our finished postcards!

3/4 Genford
Over the past couple of weeks, 3/4 Genford have been practising their skills with estimating and measuring length. Students worked in groups to estimate the length of a range of objects around the school. They then used measuring tapes and rulers to measure these objects as accurately as possible. Teamwork was needed when measuring, particularly for those objects that were longer than the measuring tape. Students also had to deal with a very windy day and their sheets flying all over the playground! Students compared their measurements with their estimations to see how close they were and ordered the objects from shortest to longest.

3/4 Panton
3/4 Panton have been working on Procedure writing in English. We played a game called spoons and wrote some instructions as a class on how to play. We had a heap of fun playing spoons and can now teach other people to play! In maths, we've been looking at addition and subtraction strategies and which ones are the most efficient for different problems. We had Mr Duhig (Lead Quality Teaching Coach) come into our class and teach us a new strategy, which we all found really helpful.
Lastly, in Science we've been looking at the relationship between the earth, sun and moon. We went outside and discovered that when the sun is shrunk down to 1m in diameter, the earth would be 106m away and the moon would be just 27cm from the earth!

3/4 Shaw
In 3/4 Shaw we have been learning about Procedure Texts. Procedural writing is any writing that instructs the reader how to do something. Some common procedure texts we use in everyday life include recipes and board game instructions.
We have learned that to write a procedure we need to include the following things:
- Title
- Aim – What the procedure aims to make or produce
- Materials or Ingredients
- Steps – in order
- A brief conclusion
We played the card game “Spoons” to learn how to write a procedure, and then applied our knowledge to writing the procedure for making fluffy slime. We tested our procedures out in class by making slime and filming our own instructional videos!

School Photos - 8th and 10th June
Please note, ordering school photos this year will be online only, there are no envelopes to fill in. Parents will receive an email confirming their order, so all orders and payments are trackable. The benefits of ordering online make the process secure, safe, and hassle free for the school office and customisable for all families.
Leading Image is offering an exciting new feature this year where you can choose to be adventurous or creative and select from 15 different back drops for your child’s individual photo – check it out online!
An important note is that whilst the government has advised sick children and staff should stay away from schools, Leading Image has unfortunately had circumstances where sick children have been brought into school for a ‘quick’ photo. Thankfully this is not common, but to ensure we aren’t forced to address a difficult situation on the day we request that families do not bring their child in for a quick photo – no exceptions.
Please note Individual and family photos can be ordered online with the same Access Key: 58768QSR
All INDIVIDUAL orders must be in by 4.30pm on Friday, 18th June.
All FAMILY orders must be in by 4.30pm on Monday, 7th June. Family orders will not be allowed after this time.
Should you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact Leading Image:

School Banking Program
As advised previously, a decision has been made by the school and School Association to cease operating our school banking program at the end of this Term.
The last time that students will be able to bring their bank books and money to deposit is Thursday 1st July.
After this date, families will need to visit the bank and undertake their child's banking in person.
Anyone who has an existing Youth Saver Account will still be able to conduct their banking for this account through the normal channels (online and via the local branch).
There are another 5 weeks to collect frequent saver reward tokens. Students can redeem any outstanding token balances from a list of current rewards here:
Anyone with 9 or more tokens can place an order for any of these reward items.
